The main question asked was “What is the United Nations Organization?” at first glimpse, it seemed like an easy topic to just google and many articles would be found yet, that was not the case. Many of the articles led to dead ends and the databases were not full of articles like many organizations would be. This is why I reached to my conclusion that the United Nations Organization is very underrated since it is an organization that many people do not follow or understand without the proper research to get that type of understanding. The sole purpose of this paper to gain a clear understanding of the organization that we were assigned and with the research done, I can honestly say that I have accomplished that. The main successes are within other countries just like Latin America with their education system reforms changing due to the fact that they had gender inequality between boys and girls and then they also have failures such as the underfunding of the organization leading to global market failure. The fact of the matter is that a majority of the organizations are getting more of the funding than being able to distribute the money equally just like women and men being paid for doing the same job. This paper explores some articles found online and offline regarding the United Nation Women’s and the organization in action, some of the major case studies and the United Nation Women’s accomplishments and failures. Throughout this paper there will be some acronyms used such as “NGOs” for the Nongovernmental Organizations, and “CSW” for the Commission of the Status of Women another “UN” is known as the United Nations. The United Nation Women’s Organization is a globe organization that focuses on the gender inequality and the struggles of gender domestic violence as well. ?
United Nations Women’s Organization
The United Nations Women’s Organization is an organization focused on adversity and equality throughout all genders, not just women and throughout the paper, it will become evident on how the UN Women’s Organization does its role along with the rest of the International Organizations. The primary focuses throughout the paper would be the relationships the UN Women’s Organizations have with other Nongovernmental Organizations. Secondly, the case studies that have been following the United Nations Women’s Organization throughout its time as a governmental organization. Finally, this paper will focus on the accomplishments and failures that the organization has gone through to make them the organization that they are today.
The Organization in Action
The UN Women has been solely known for their use of humanitarian action throughout the globe whether it be in South America, Asia or even Africa as well. the representatives come together to be able to set up the global norms and standards for the organization through the UN Women Humanitarian Strategy implemented in 2014 till 2017. Crisis is not gender based and it does happen to women, men, boys and girls of all ages throughout their lives. In their community, it is known that the women are the sole first responders to these crises due to the fact that they are the individuals that need to be able to be resilient and help their loved ones and others around them become resilient as well (What We Do Humanitarian Action, 2014).
The UN Women have come up with many different solutions. One of the biggest solutions that they are strictly enforcing is the equality between men and women whether it be as partners or beneficiaries of humanitarian action (What We Do Humanitarian Action, 2014). These men and women believe that the majority of their population needs to have a more gender equalized society in order for the crisis solution to work out. Their mission is to reduce vulnerabilities, address risks, leverage women’s leadership and promote resilience in these people during the crisis that falls upon them. The main three solutions that the UN women has is prevention, preparedness and response. The UN Women is always looking for ways to prevent any crisis from occurring again, making sure the communities they are helping with are prepared for their initial response to the crisis no matter how big or how small (What We Do Humanitarian Action, 2014). The men and women that are working endlessly to make those solutions possible ones that come from either family members or the community to ensure the equality for all. The main key for solutions to work is if the community becomes more intact and work together since the humanitarian action being used is giving the men and women the ability for their relationships to increase whether it be at home, or at the workplace.
Relations with Nongovernmental Organizations
The UN Women has an active participation with nongovernmental organizations through the Commission of the Status of Women. The main structures of the UN are simply 51 countries coming together in 1945, just after World War II to be able to develop friendly relations and work alongside one another to end hunger, poverty, illiteracy, disease and to be able to recognize, understand and respect one another’s rights and freedoms. (NGO’s and Women’s Human Rights Activistis at the UN and CSW 2016, 2016). The main relationship the UN Women carry is the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’s agenda is women’s empowerment not only in their hometown countries but in countries across the globe such as countries in South America, Africa, Asia and many more.
Some of the main goals that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action focusses on is promoting and protecting the full enjoyment of all human rights and the basic fundamental freedoms of all women throughout their lifecycle. The Platform for Action also wants to promote to share common concerns of men and women working together to make social equality within the workplace as far as men valuing and respecting the women’s condition and situations that some women feel like are barriers for other women (The United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, 1995). Workplace equality is a situation that many countries strive for and to be able to successfully achieve that goal would be a huge change for many nations. Although, there may be many different crises that have been solved, many don’t seem to change especially, violence. Ever since the cold war, violence in women continues to grow and does not seem to end. It has become crucial for the elimination of all forms of violence against them and their use as a weapon of war. Many of violence towards women are rape, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, torture or murder. Throughout time, the UN Women are continuing to grow with the equality towards women, men, boys and girls. The Platform just wants to create a just, peaceful and humane world based on human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Case Studies
There are two main case studies found in my research which are the Education of Women in Latin America and the UN Women with Vietnam. First, the Education of Women in Latin America focused on growing the education level of women past the elementary and high school levels. Many women believed that it would be a waste of time and money to attend college due to the fact that in the countries they lived in, the only occupation that a woman can obtain with a college degree is a teaching degree and many women refused to become teachers. In Latin American countries, almost all educational opportunity is open to women yet very few women that are well-trained intellectually are to be found in the lands to the south of the Rio Grande (Williams, 1927, p. 1). Many of these women never obtained a degree so they are illiterate although through time, that changes since many women now in the Latin Community tend to dream and desire a more independent career.
A school located in Argentina, there was co-ed schooling meaning girls and boys attended separate schools in their republic public school systems. They wanted to make it normalized for boys and girls to attend different schools since in most cases, the school system believed they should have been taught different materials in school. But just like stated above, many girls were given the option to continue their education but a majority of their parents felt like it was “a waste of precious time in the acquisition of technical knowledge in which many girls are not interested, and in the certification and large numbers of them have no desire to teach” (Williams, 1927, pg. 1). In Colombia, there is no such thing as secondary schools for girls due to the very conservative Roman Church. If they did attend secondary schools, it would be a major scandal for the country. “In low income countries especially with “Negros”, it was known for the women to just come and go as they please since a majority of them felt like when they got a job and was able to give their kids the support they needed, that was enough for them. In the Dominican Republic, there was an incident where they separated boys and girls after secondary schools. That system changed for the schools when a group of adolescence high school boys were gathering around outside the girl’s high school and annoyed the girls to the point where the police were called. The educational authorities then decided that enough was enough so they put the schools together” (Williams, 1927, p. 1). Since a majority of the Latin American countries lack the equality between men and women, it is the sole purpose for the UN Women’s involvement there. When many do think of the gender equality, many do not realize how diverse it can be and how many countries can be affected by the inequality. Education and the workforce are the top categories for gender inequality which is why the UN Women strive so rigorously to end it.
Now with the advanced knowledge and unlimited opportunities given to women, we see many women grow up and achieving higher education landing their desirable jobs as CEO’s, leaders and many other important jobs in the world. The number of women obtaining higher educations and seeking jobs outside of teaching, which was a norm for women in the past, has increased dramatically and continues to increase thanks to the help of the UN Women and their contribution to the other nations about women’s education and the policies that are implemented.
Another major case study made was the UN Women’s Organization’s involvement with their Viet Nam program. The main purpose of the Plan Viet Nam was the crisis of violence not only with women, men and children but in many different nations globally and the situations that arose during these crises. “They schools around the areas were very prevalent and became one of the main barriers to girls’ empowerment and gender equality. The UN Women also wanted to be able to enact that reduction of poverty and in Viet Nam, they managed to reduce the rate from 58.1% in 1993 to 9.6% in 2012” (UN Women Viet Name, 2016). Just like many different countries, especially the United States, there is a substantial difference in the paychecks that men and women meet. In the UN Women database on their Plan Viet Nam, it was proven that “women were paid an overall average of 75% of a men’s average wage” (UN Women Viet Name, 2016). In the workforce, working across the globe, when have always been unpaid in comparison with men. With the majority of women working now, it creates a social issue across the globe with many different countries.
There are many different other solutions that Plan Viet Nam has come up with. Many other situations are working in “20 lower and upper secondary schools in Hanoi to project aims to foster safe, accountable and child-friendly schools where adolescent girls and boys receive a quality education in an environment free of gender-based violence. To this date, it is evident that trained 450 youth leaders on leadership and innovative communication skills” (Wolf, 2015, p. 22). Since in Viet Nam, a majority of the children, primarily boys, grew up with the idea of that they are in an area of war especially during the Vietnam War era. Whenever the children grow up, instead of learning how to read and write, they are learning how to clean rifles, ak47’s and how to load and unload ammunition into guns. This in all is a major crisis for many other neighboring countries and their relating nations since instead of focusing on the war, the primary focus for children is their education. Thanks to the efforts from the UN Women in their Plan Vietnam, it was evident that it has helped their efforts to increasing the education in children whether in be in secondary schools and or their high-level educational school’s overall success numbers.
Many different success came from the UN Women’s Organization and some of the main ones are that “27 laws were amended or reformed in 17 different countries, more than 7,000 women leaders, aspiring candidates and elected public officials trained in 32 countries, gender equality advocates influenced economic policy/anti-poverty strategies in 41 countries, economic services including social assistance and employment services delivered to women in 57 countries, 121,000 crisis-affected women and girls assisted in 31 countries and the 43 countries increased budget allocations for gender equality and women’s empowerment since 2014” (UN Women Annual Report 2017-2018, 2018). A majority of these statistics are updated every two years and the numbers are always increasing. With the amount of work efforts that the UN Women has been able to do, one day, the UN Women will be able to fully be successful in all of their ambitions.
The main success that the UN Women has is their gender equality and their improvement within the work environment for women. The UN Women have also been working hard with legislators to pass tougher laws that can decrease the amount of violence towards women, which has also decreased as well since many new laws and policies have been implemented. The women in these countries have been able to be able to retrieve more information about the issues arising in their countries. “52 countries strengthened legislation to address violence against women and girls since 2014” (UN Women Annual Report 2017-2018, 2018). With the help of many of those 52 countries, it is proof that many of other countries can also follow with the legislations to work on addressing the violence against women. It is hope that by the next annual report, the numbers will rise.
There really aren’t many failures but with the few that they do have, the main failure for the UN Women is a global market failure just due to the fact that the UN Woman’s organization is underfunded. “For 2007-13, only 0.37% of the EU budget was dedicated to promoting women’s rights and gender equality. The budget for UN Women in 2013 totaled just $275 million – less than 5% of the UN’s budget” (A Global Market Failure, 2018) meaning that of course the UN Woman’s organization is entirely underfunded, it just goes to show that many of these other organizations do not take into consideration that the UN Women needs to be more funded. Many women need to start participating in the work efforts for increasing the gender equality across the globe. It has been said that without the efforts, it would lead to a global market failure.
The UN Woman’s Organization is mainly in place to ensure that women and men’s equality is set into place across the globe. Throughout the years, the globe has seen the UN Woman’s Organization has crafted into a successful organization. With the statistics continuing to grow and rise, it is evident that many of these organizations find that the UN Women is underrated and underfunded. The UN Women has grown relationships with many other Nongovernmental Organizations throughout the year and many of those organizations have supported the UN Women. In their efforts to increase equality between men and women whether it be in the workforce or education or even with domestic violence, the research has shown that the UN Women’s efforts have been successful. In continents like Latin America, Asia, the Americas, it has shown to be slow improvement with their accomplishments such as the many countries that have fixed their laws with the education systems, workplace systems or even the domestic violence laws to make them all benefit the equality of men and women.
