One of the biggest discussions we have faced as a country lately is the legalization of Marijuana and I am here to show why Marijuana should be legalized.
A huge epidemic we faced as a country is the unemployment rate, the current unemployment rate is at 3.7%. The legalization of marijuana and its growth rate to 2025 could lead to about 1 million job increase. After the legalization in Colorado in about a year just that single state saw about 18,000 new full-time jobs and nearly $2 billion in economic growth. Not only jobs such as growers, processors, and retailers but also business that would benefit such as banks, consulting services, logistics, marketing companies, accounting firms etc. Health care is another huge factor that would play a role in the legalization of Marijuana, CBD and THC have over 60 chemical compounds that help in the medical field. Marijuana has had a drastic increase in help with patients that have Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal cord injuries, Cancer, Arthritis, Epilepsy, Bowel Disease, and Insomnia. The most common use for medical marijuana is for pain control, it is very effective for chronic pain that effects millions of Americans. Medical marijuana is far less addictive then Advil or any pain medication and has more of an effect. Marijuana is also used to help nausea and glaucoma a big problem plenty of Americans face. For example, about 75% believe medical marijuana should be legal in the U.S., and 33% would be used to treat pain. As well 1,544 doctors also believed medical marijuana would solve lots of problems in hospitals. For another example on why Marijuana is a positive for legalization, cannabis data from the firm New Frontier released a document in 2017 accumulating that the legalization at a federal level would lead to $131 billion in federal tax revenue being consumed between 2017-2025. All in all, our government could go from basically making no income to millions even billions of dollars generating from this business. Think about how all this extra income for the government could be used on schools, hospitals, shelters, etc.
Now from one side of the story you hear the positive sides of things what about the concerns from the people? Many people might say “Marijuana is a harmful drug that causes people to act out of the ordinary and be dangerous”. Marijuana has a sedating effect that causes the user to be in a relaxed state of mind. Let’s talk about alcohol for a second, you are legally allowed to purchase alcohol at age 21 in America and consume it. Alcohol will give you the effect of being unbalanced, slurring words, aggressive behavior, loss of state of mind, etc. This kills about 88,000 people a year, how many people have you heard of dying from cannabis less than 100. Alcohol and cigarettes are far more dangerous than marijuana and cause more problems / deaths yearly. Another example. “People will lose control of not being able to do their job”. With the legalization of marijuana in all 9 states for recreational use no states allow this to be used at the workplace similar to drinking on the job.
In conclusion the legalization of marijuana would do nothing but help our country in a positive way not only with jobs, health care, money income, but also cops going after more serious crimes, less housing space in jails etc. After the legalization of Marijuana happens in all states imagine the amount of full-time jobs that could be created, imagine how many patients would be relieved going through pain and agony, maybe marijuana is the last chance of relief they have.
