As an adult working at the school environment which children and young adults attend for five days a week, we have an impact on children’s and young people’s behaviour. Children and young people learn how to behave by mirroring the adults they see and by knowing what rules they need to follow. This means that our own behaviour can either promote positive or negative behaviour between children or young people.
There are few key ways how our own behaviour can promote positive behaviour between children and young adults. We should always be polite towards to anybody we interact with, show them a respect by fully listening what they have say along with giving them time to speak. When listening we should make sure that our body language and facial expressions mirror our interest with what the other person has to say. We should always be consistent with our behaviour towards everybody, such as when we give acknowledgement to somebody’s effort, praise somebody’s progress or when intervening to disagreements. We should also know and model the school’s rules and policies.
There are few key ways how our own behaviour can promote negative behaviour between children and young adults. If we ignore what somebody has to say or our body language or facial expression shows that we do not care what they have to say, children would feel that they and their opinions do not matter and they would not come to us in future if they would have any problems or issues. If we would talk between ourselves or towards children and young people using impolite rude language, they could copy this behaviour between themselves or back towards us or other adults. If we would not follow the school rules and policies ourselves, the children and young adults would also feel that they do not need to follow them and then the behaviour within the whole school environment would become unmanageable.
