As mentioned before, meat is not eaten very much because many in Nicaragua can not afford it. On special occasions, however, a grilled steak may be cooked, called “bistec la parrilla”. Another food eaten on special occasion is “nacatamales”. Nacatamales (right) is a popular steamed corn cake and is larger than a normal tamale. It is filled with meat and potato, tomato, capers, raisins, olives, green bell peppers, or peas can be added. After adding everything you want inside, the nacatamale is steamed in banana leaves. This dish is very time consuming to make so it is only eaten on special occasions (Dining for Women).
