Chemistry in Architecture
Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances, and their interaction with energy. Chemistry is part of everything in our lives, and it is necessary to have a basic understanding of chemistry for almost every profession. Chemistry is involved in everything we do, whether it is cooking, or building. There are five main branches of chemistry: biochemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. Biochemistry explores the chemical processes within and related to living organisms, and it is a laboratory-based science that brings together biology and chemistry. Physical chemistry is the branch of chemistry that applies physics to the study of chemistry. Organic chemistry is the study of carbon and its compounds, or otherwise known as the study of the chemistry of life. On the other hand, inorganic chemistry is the study of compounds not covered by organic chemistry, or the study of inorganic compounds. These inorganic compounds that do not contain a C-H bond and many inorganic compounds contain metals. Chemistry is important in life because everything is made up of chemicals. We are made of many molecules and elements, carbon is the main one because all of the molecules that make up living tissue have carbon as part of their foundation. Not only living things are made up of chemicals and molecules, so are nonliving things and medications. So are the planets in space and the stars in the universe. Everything is made up of chemicals. Many changes around us are due to chemical reactions which include a color change in leaves and plants, even cooking food is a result in a chemical reaction. Knowing chemistry will be useful in making day to day decisions, like is it safe to mix two household cleaners, or the expiration date on certain food products, etc. Understanding basic chemistry is essential for understanding the effects of chemicals on the environment. This can be helpful in determining what is best used to make plants grow, and how to dispose of chemicals without causing air pollution or water pollution, etc. As you can see, chemistry is important in day to day life and making decisions.
Analytical chemistry is used in studying architecture because it is the study of matter and the development of tools to measure properties of matter. Chemistry-related traits such as density, reflectiveness, adhesiveness, viscosity, and thermal properties are the main role in the construction of a building.
