For some teachers and parents

For some teachers and parents, punishing a child isn’t easy. The child may throw a tantrum, which will make the punishment a little bit difficult. However, punishment can range from verbal to physical (lectures-hitting). In addition, some parents will consider using implements such as belt, canes, paddles, and sandals/slippers. Nevertheless, for my final article I have read “Spanking and Child Development: We Know Enough Now to Stop Hitting our Children” by Elizabeth Gershoff. I have learned that spanking a child violates human rights.
First of all, while spanking a child can lead to long and short term effects; such as aggressive, delinquent behavior; an increased risk of abuse as they get older, and damaged cognitive development. But most of all, it can violate their rights as human beings. According to United Nations, corporal punishment of any form violates the article 19 of the convection on the rights of the child. In addition, there are some laws that will help protect the child from punishments. I found this interesting because the government is trying their best to make sure that children grow up in a safe environment.
Second of all, more than 53 countries have banned corporal punishment. Unfortunately, the Untied States did not make the cut and that there allowing 19 states to allow educators to use corporal punishment on their students. In my opinion, I find this to be unacceptable because, disabled and minority students are more likely to endure punishments than their white peers. Which is sad considering the fact that these students are going to school to become better people of tomorrow and that corporal punishment has no business whatsoever in the education system.
In conclusion, corporal punishment violates the rights of children. It has long and short time effects. Additionally, children can be protected from punishment by various laws. Unfortunately, some states legalized corporal punishment. Luckily there 53 countries that banned corporal punishment. I don’t believe in physical punishments. I believe in self discipline. To me, it helps children if they use boundaries, communications, and lead an example to not use force.
