Guidance and counseling started in the olden times as philosophical teachings from scientists and philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. In the United States of America, it started as guidance to the workforce to become productive people of the society. It evolved as a platform to assess individuals or a large group of people and is also being used as a standardized test for schools to assess students.
Guidance is a broad subject. It includes emotional, physical, and social aspects of individuals and sometimes of groups. Since individuals have different characteristics, guidance and counseling cannot be boxed into specific and exact steps. It differs in every individual as every one of us has unique needs. Counseling is the most popular type of guidance. It usually includes a counselor who provides the counseling and a counselee who is given instructions on how to approach issues he is encountering. This type of counseling is an individual type, it may be personal, educational, or vocational in nature. Some who provide guidance and counseling service include over the phone counseling, psychological testing and assessment, interventions, workshops and seminars about stress management, self-esteem building, managing conflicts and many more.
The processes mentioned above are different approaches to manage our well-being. Well-being is the state of being at ease. With that in mind, when we refer to students’ well-being we can say that feeling secured in the school environment without fear of being bullied, having the confidence that they can get through the struggles that they experience in their subjects thru the support and intervention of teachers are part of it too.
Children are the ones in the biggest need of guidance. During this formative years, a lot of changes are happening in a child’s body. Hormonal and physical changes that confuse and sometimes scare them. Changes in school activities and subjects are aplenty. Peer pressure can also add to the stress that the children experience. The career they want to take and the path that they need to go through to achieve those goals are additional things that they need guidance. If they are not given proper guidance they may go astray, lack confidence, have emotional and moral issues or worse all of it.
