I learned that the word “slave” comes from a time of the capturing and trading of the Slavonic people. One of my friend told me that “If your great grandparents came over from England or Ireland, you’re considered either white, or Anglo-American/Irish American. But most people just refer to you as white or American. If a Slavic person moves to the US, their grandchildren aren’t considered Slavic Americans, just “American”. There’s no way to tell apart an American of Slavic heritage from an American of English or Irish heritage. If an Italian moves to America, their grandchildren who may still look Italian, Sicilian, etc. are usually considered just American or some people might call them Italian because those phenotypical traits are still dominant. Why is it that Slavic people are called Slavic until they arrive here and their children become fully Americanized? Does the ”Slav” magically disappear? Same goes for everyone else. The Italian magically disappears in a few decades, the Irish, the English. The differential factor here is simply place of birth, rather than genes that make up one’s ethnic identity. No one is going to admit that they’re Slavs, or Irish if they’re American, and their family has been living here for a hundred-two hundred years. This proves that for humans, race and genetics isn’t actually the determining factor of one’s identity. You can’t tell the heritage of people just by looking at them. Traits between people are shared all over. Identity is therefore a social construct, not necessarily biological as it’s impossible to actually pick humans apart and show a concrete difference between them. Which is why race is a pseudoscience and has been debunked ever since genetic testing became prominent, and dna was studied decades ago. There’s no deep importance to one’s ethnicity. Humans are essentially a migratory species. We don’t stay at one place for too long and this creates a lot of complexity to our identities. Ignore race because it’s beyond idiotic. Are we Slavic, Mediterranean, Germanic, African, simply because our ancestors came from places that were labelled such? Modern dna testing shows that no one is pure anything. Most people have dna from all over the world. Including African dna, considering we all came out of Africa. We even have Neanderthal dna, and Denisovan dna. So what does that make us then? By that logic we should either call ourselves ”everything” or just give up on ethnic identity period as it’s too complicated to narrow down to one or two things. No one is going to go around saying ”my heritage is part Neanderthal. They migrated to Europe some 60,000 years ago”.
