In my opinion creating artificial intelligence is not a good idea because of where we are in society today. It is unwise to start making supercomputers with unlimited knowledge and we don’t fully understand what we are dealing with. It’s very dangerous to play with unknown because one slip up could cause a cataclysmic event and lead to the extinction of humanity.
In every movie are book about AI; from I Robot, Avenger, Terminator, regardless of the creator’s intentions good or bad, there is always a turn for the worst and the robots try to take over the world. In small usages such as self driving cars or vacuum cleaners that control themselves could be helpful to humans but humanoid robots that make their own decisions and think on their own is very dangerous in itself and in the wrong hands could be devastating to society. For example if the military built and army of AI robots whose main purpose was to destroy other countries with no sense of remorse, guilt, and didn’t care about right or wrong. What if the AI outsmarted the humans and try to kill everyone or like in the story I Have No Mouth But I Must Screen where the humans created the IBM to fight wars and it destroyed the human race.
Many brilliant people are worried about the threats AI poses such as Bill Gates, and Stephen Hawkins. Hawkins stated “artificial intelligence could spell the end of human race”. Elon Musk creator of tesla is having a dispute with CEO of facebook Mark Zuckerberg over his Artificial Intelligence because he felt Zuckerberg was messing with things he didn’t fully understand. Musk referred to AI as “summoning the demon”. Days after Musk made his comments Facebook’s AI were shutdown due to the chatbots creating and communicating in their own language. A british inventor Clive Sinclair told BBC news “Once you start to make machines that are rivaling and surpassing humans with intelligence, it’s going to be very difficult for us to survive. “It’s just an inevitability.” How many intelligent people have to speak up for scientists to stop playing with fire. Even in the right hands AI is extremely dangerous because it can be very difficult to fully align the AI’s goals with ours. For example if you give a machine a command it will attempt to get it done no matter what. If a superintelligent system is tasked with a ambitious geoengineering project, it might wreak havoc with our ecosystem as a side effect, and view human attempts to stop it as a threat to be met. There are too many loopholes in trying to create AI.
Not all outcomes of AI end in world destruction but how about another recession. AI effects jobs by directly displacing people whose jobs can be done by smart machines. This bold step has already been taken by Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance in Japan. The company stated that by the end of March, 34 of its employees will be replaced with an artificial intelligence system that can calculate payouts on policyholders. Although this may look like just a tiny cost-cutting technique by a company, it has a much deeper impact. It raises the question of what will happen to the future of employment. How many jobs will be lost down the road due to AI that can do the job of hundreds of employees which would be very cost and time efficient.
The top tech voice in china Kai-Fu Lee founder of venture capital firm innovation Ventures says robots are likely to replace 50% of all jobs within the next decade. I don’t believe that’s the problem but the employers who are willing to put millions out of jobs just to save a couple dollars. How can we make the world a better place when we don’t know how to treat the people in it? Another issue that would arise is how would we classify humanoid robots who felt like real people. Would we treat them as property or as citizens? scientist should find a way to give machines conscience that way we could hold them accountable because they would be able to make their own decisions.
For these reason i believe we should not be creating certain forms of AI such as war machines or job stealing robots and we should stop trying to create new life until we can learn to treat each other properly and with respect which I believe is the only way to make an advancement in this world.
