Individual Associated With a Nonprofit Organization
A nonprofit organization is a business involved in improving the welfare of the public, which includes implementing strategies meant to improve the health and the environment surrounding some of the populations in a given region (Hinna, Gnan, & Monteduro, 2016). These organizations are also exempted from taxation by the government since their focus is mainly not making profits (Hinna, Gnan, & Monteduro, 2016). I had the chance to have a brief conversation with the CEO of The American Red Cross which is a nonprofit organization concerned with improving the health of the American citizens. The American Red Cross organization was established in 1881 by Clara Barton to address emergencies and educate the American citizens on health matters (Jones, 2013).
Identify the Individual within the Organization and Their Role and Responsibilities
Gail J. McGovern is the president of the American Red Cross who took the position on June 23, 2008 serving the organization to date. Gail J. McGovern holds leadership roles in The American Red Cross organization where she makes important decisions as the president of the organization (American Red Cross, 2018). This is based on the organization’s mission, which is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in times of emergencies through the mobilization of volunteers and the generosity of donors (American Red Cross, 2018). Some of the important roles and responsibilities that Gail J. McGovern performs include ensuring that the organization has the necessary resources required to keep the organization running and achieving its goals and objectives (Jones, 2013). She makes important decisions to ensure that all people affected by disasters across the United States receive proper care to prevent suffering. She also ensures that her organization adequately educates communities in preparedness for any disasters, which are prone to happen (Jones, 2013).
Define Their Relationship with the Public Sector (Local, State or Federal Governments) and Describe What Is Required To Have A Successful Public Private Partnership Work
The American Red Cross has a unique relationship with the public sector where the federal government recognizes the organization as a nonprofit organization and exempts it from taxation (Irwin, 2013). The United States Congress also granted the Organization a charter to enable the organization to carry out its duties and responsibilities as delegated by the federal government (Irwin, 2013). Some of the responsibilities delegated by the federal government to the organization include providing family communication as well as other important support to the United States military during combat. The government also requires the organization to fulfill provisions made in Geneva Conventions, which include protecting victims of conflict since the United States is one of the signatories (Irwin, 2013).
The third responsibility is to implement a system to manage domestic as well as international disasters by providing relief to the victims of disasters. This has been attributed to the close relationship with the federal government although the government does not own the organization (Irwin, 2013). For a successful public private partnership to work, it is important that nonprofit organizations agree and sign a memorandum of understanding, which will specify the duties and responsibilities required from both parties (Irwin, 2013). This will include the duties and responsibilities of each government level to the organization as well as the responsibilities of the organization towards the public, which is a responsibility of the government (Irwin, 2013).
Challenges They Must Overcome In Addressing Social Issues Relating To the Mission of the Organization
The American Red Cross is an organization dedicated in addressing humanitarian issues to all the citizens of the United States, which is the main mission of the organization (American Red Cross, 2018). The organization however faces some challenges that they must overcome to address social issues, which surround the organization (Jones, 2013). Some of the challenges include the attack on the humanitarian principles, which are under threat from political leaders. Most of the governments are engaging and influencing humanitarian principles for their own political objectives, which is negatively affecting the American Red Cross mission (Jones, 2013).
This has challenged the organization in maintaining its humanitarian principles of independence and neutrality. The organization needs to create a good balance between their basic principles and the need to adhere to the new perspectives of their mission and the influence by governments for political reasons (Jones, 2013). The organization is also having a challenge from the development of other humanitarian organizations, which affects the organization’s humanitarian position and their fundraising process (Jones, 2013). Since the American Red Cross largely relies from funds from donors, this will affect operations of the organization in fulfilling its mission. The organization needs to differentiate itself from other organizations to improve its social reputation to be able to attract funds from the private as well as public sources (Jones, 2013).
