Short Background on Leader
In order to complete this assessment I have chosen the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Pierre James Trudeau as my chosen leader. Born in December 25, 1971 in Ottawa, Ontario Justin Trudeau is the son of late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He followed in his father’s footsteps by winning the elections in Canada in the year 2015 and became the 23rd prime minister of Canada. He is also the leader of the liberal party since the year 2013. He graduated from the McGill University where he was then a member of the debating team. In his early days he completed his secondary schooling from College Jean-de-Brebeuf, then graduating from McGill University he took a year break to travel and then returned to become a teacher.
After that he moved to Whistler, British Columbia where he became a snowboarding instructor and also used to work as a bouncer in a night club. After a gap of couple of months he then went to the University Of British Columbia where he attained the degree of Bachelor of Education in the year 1998. It was until 2008 where he was first elected to the Canadian Parliament and eventually becoming a leader of the liberal party in the year 2013.
While campaigning during the elections he then promised the people of Canada to bring change and also promised to increase tax for the wealthy and tax cuts for middle class people. As per my concept of leadership he really fits in very well as he is a committed environmentalist, he has always had a positive attitude. Justin Trudeau has a positive vision and also have an agenda for the country. He is considered as ambitious as well as hopeful. He became the prime minister at the age of 43 becoming the 2nd youngest prime minister of Canada.
The leaders impact on workplace diversity
It was the year of 2015 where Justin started making the headlines for all the right reasons by promoting diversity in the workplace. After becoming the prime minister he then formed a cabinet composed of equal number of women as well as men. Well this was seen happening for the very first time. While campaigning for the elections in the year 2015 Justin assured the Canadian people to build the government in a diverse way. There were 31 ministers who were sworn on November 4, 2015 and out of them there were 15 women.
The Canadian population in 2015 was 50.9% women, 22.3% minorities and 4.69% indigenous whereas in Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet the ratio of women was 48.3%, 16.1% minorities and 6.5% indigenous. After winning the elections Justin Trudeau delivered what he promised to the Canadian people which was bringing diversity in the workplace by appointing Canada’s first gender-balanced cabinet. Later on in the year 2016 Justin Trudeau made sure that the Liberal Government’s main goal is diversity and therefore applications were opened to the general public to work in the government. An example can be seen where the prime minister embraced hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees entering to Canada where the refugees were welcomed as new Canadians. Diversity is not just sound social policy but therefore it is an engine of invention and not only diversity generates creativity but it also enriches the world.
By adopting to these approaches Mr. Trudeau is seen being more intentional towards these issues as compared to other predecessors. Therefore liberal government has made efforts in order to promote transparency as well as promoting equal employment opportunities. With the help of promoting diversity in the workplace Justin Trudeau and his government is leading to better outcomes, diversity in the workplace allows Canadian people where they can see themselves to be represented in the government an example which has been mentioned above and also workplace diversity brings experiences to the government policies as well as operations. Mr. Trudeau is seen embracing differing cultures in order to support workplace diversity. The Prime Minister is seen as a new kind of leadership. Leadership should be focused on extending the ladder of opportunity for everyone as per the Justin Trudeau. Mr. Trudeau believes in positive leadership which creates a virtuous circle where people can respond to a positive, inclusive vision of society
After briefly discussing Mr. Trudeau’s impact on workplace diversity it became very clear that he is inclined towards a democratic leadership approach where the prime minister is seen developing an emotional link among the team, share decision making with the group members and therefore involves staff in goal planning of the department, asking for their views or opinions. Democratic Leaders confer final authority on the group. They function as collectors of group opinion and take a vote before making a decision. (Dubrin, 2016, p. 125) The democratic leadership theory is a sub-type of participative leadership which is therefore based on management openness because the leader accepts suggestions for managing the operation from group members, collaborative leadership, team leadership, shared leadership, welcoming ideas where discussion is encouraged. (Dubrin, 2016, p. 125) As this particular theory of leadership endorses on giving everyone equal employment opportunity to participate, ideas are exchanged are freely and the bottom line is where discussion is encouraged. Mr. Trudeau’s theory of leadership is based on fairness as well as competency where everyone is considered equal which therefore leads to innovative ideas which leads to a rise in terms of productivity. It perfectly works well within a diverse workforce where sub-ordinates are encouraged to share their knowledge more openly and freely. This theory ultimately results in high employee satisfaction where they feel valued, accepted, acknowledged and therefore respected. It not only helps in staff retention but also fosters a positive relationship with the staff members. This theory also endorses the teamwork approach. (Dubrin, 2016, p. 125)
I firmly believe that the Democratic Theory of Leadership links very well within my leader’s impact on diversity as it is all about empowering co-workers and bringing out the best in them. It is seen really important from Mr. Trudeau’s perspective to empower co-workers regardless of their race, sex, gender, ethnicity etc. Mr. Trudeau is seen as a leader that focuses high on endorsing employee/ people. This theory encourages them to work together as a team towards a common goal and is also beneficial for any organisation’s productivity. It provides support among the team and removes obstacles. Justin Trudeau’s perspective of leadership is inspiring people to step up and serve their country in a best possible way.
Mr. Trudeau is that sort of a leader who is people oriented, a leader who is keen on creating positive environment by increasing confidence as well as optimism. Therefore this style of leadership is very well suited to manage competent people who are very well eager in terms of assuming responsibility. (Dubrin, 2016, p. 126) Justin Trudeau is a team captain and therefore not a one man team. He is seen as a leader who is very well-briefed, reasonable as well as understands his position very well.
As per my concept leadership is all about empowering other co-workers and bringing out the best in them. In order to be an effective leader I need to work on factors such as developing self-confidence, humility, maintain standards of honesty and integrity, need to empathise by understanding others and developing an emotional link with them, involving staff in the goal planning of the department, asking for their views or opinions, continuously striving on my learning skills.
My leadership journey’s perspective is based on giving everyone equal opportunity to participate, where ideas can be exchanged freely, where discussion is encouraged.
The acronym SMART Goals stands for goals that are specific, goals which can be measured with the help of metrics, goals that can be achievable, goals that makes sense by being relevant and last aspect is a target date or in what amount of time.
Therefore, In order to be an effective leader the following specific action plan has been which has SMART goals in it:
1) Improving Inter-personal skills
Interpersonal skills are very critical in order to be an effective leader. Therefore this will be achieved by spending ample amount of time in listening carefully to the viewpoints of other sub-ordinates.
Sharing vision, sharing mission, experiences with the team more clearly as well as thoroughly and working in groups, teams and asking for feedbacks.
2) Start living in conformity with my values
In terms of starting living in conformity with my values I need to work on to make choices, to take actions because this will effortlessly help me in improving my key leadership skills. And if I start doing this I believe people will respect my views, thoughts/opinions as well as my leadership.
3) Inspiring others
Encouraging as well as inspiring sub-ordinates by making sure that they reach their personal targets and reach to their full potential will enable me in being an effective leader. This will be achieved by involving sub-ordinates in goal planning for the department making sure that they are being valued, recognised as well as accepted. It will be measured by setting up individual performance challenges which will make sure that they step out of their comfort zone and in the end rewarding them for their dedication as well as commitment.
4) Working on Gap Grids
In order to be a better and an effective leader working on gap grids would be a very good way to get feedback from the colleagues as they are the ones who know me very well, and by asking them questions about myself such as how could I improve my professional networking within the team, what strengths and opportunities I can improve on, and to be an effective leader what approach or change in approach should I use etc would be considered a really good way to know myself from the team members because they are the ones with whom I work on a daily basis, how they would rate my performance or confidence level or what can I do further to improve my leadership skills so in order to be a leader or a manager I will be working on my gaps grids more often and frequently.
