Technology Improvement Initiative
IntroductionThe use of computers in health care has been driven by need. Over the past years, technology in the health care has grown rapidly and today technology is used in patient treatment and administration purposes in a health facility. The first use of computers was mainly for administrative purposes, which included billing systems and other financial processes and later were incorporated to other departments like the lab and in the pharmacy (Tan, 2013). For the achievement of successful and quality health care, health care facilities require effective and efficient medical technology in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients. Innovative technology will lead to improved health care (Tan, 2013). This executive summary will analyze the use of new technology to improve the quality of health care reducing the number of mortality rates, decrease costs related to traditional health care methods and increase patient and nurse job satisfaction. The future of health care lies in innovative technology.
The Purpose of the Initiative
The purpose for this initiative is for the management to avail the benefits of technology to health care facilities and patients, to ease the burden of treatment of diseases while ensuring effective and efficient health care services. Through this initiative, clinical information and laboratory test results will be exchanged electronically. The use of technology is a continuous process in reducing operational costs and at the same time providing health information and its access to the nurse staff and the patients (Mantas, Househ , Hasman, & International Conference on Informatics, Management, and Technology in Healthcare 2014).
The improvement of information and communication technology is important in ensuring quality health care provision is achieved. Information and communication technology can be used by administrators in decision-making and can enhance accountability in the health sector (Tan, 2013). Incorporation of technology systems in the health care sector can also improve health education among the staff and among patients. Use of information technology will help prevent medical errors that can arise if things are done manually and improve accuracy in the health care procedures and processes (Rocha & Guarda, 2018). Information technology will save on resources like time and money. When procedures are done manually, they take a lot of time. Information technology will save on paper work resources. Information technology will increase the access to health care enabling patients to access health care services easily and at a reduced cost because most traditional methods and procedures were quite costly and time consuming (Rocha & Guarda, 2018).
The Target Audience
The target population for the new technology policy would be the hospital administrators, patients, and the nurse staff. A three-month study will be conducted to analyze how the initiative will impact the management, patient satisfaction and effectiveness of methods and procedures. Once this is done, the unit council will meet to come up with an official policy and a procedure to integrate the initiative to the facility. The completed project will be presented to the executive committee for approval and once the executive committee approves the new policy, the implementation process will begin.
The Benefits of the Initiative
Implementation of new and recent technology will help patients access and acquire quality health care as well as improve patient satisfaction (Malec, 2015). With the use of technology, patients can be assured of quality health care. Information technology is one of the effective methods in ensuring excellent health care standards. Nurses will have an easy time accessing medical records and other information relating to a patient and use non-straneous procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of patients resulting to job satisfaction (Malec, 2015). Improved technology has been shown to shorten the medical procedures involved in the treatment of illnesses and shorten the time patients are at the hospital because treatment procedures are quick and easy.
The Cost of the Initiative
Although it shall be costly to implement the new technology policy, more benefits come with the implementation of the new policy (Latifi, 2018). The cost would be insignificant compared to the advantages it has to the hospital. Trainers will come together with the new machines and train hospital staff on how to use the equipments. The trainers can train a few members of the hospital who will train all other staff to reduce the cost and time of training all members at once.
The Basis upon Which the Initiative Will Be Evaluated
The technology initiative will be evaluated by a team of professionals together with the management by ensuring that every department has the new system installed and in use and every staff is in compliance with the requirements of the new technology. Action will be taken on those who do not comply with the new initiative and additional training may be done. A monthly report can be created to measure nurses’ response time to patients, patient satisfaction, and service and procedure improvements (Latifi, 2018).
Strengths and Weaknesses of the Proposal
This initiative was shared with the RN to BSN program at Grand Canyon University who made the following opinion on the executive summary. One weakness that he pointed out was the cost of implementing the initiative. The costs involved with the purchasing of the new technology and training of the staff will be huge to the hospital but the initiative had many strengths which included the benefits to the hospital and patient care improvement and access. The summary showed an implementation procedure for the new technology. He was convinced that the executive committee of the organization would approve the proposal.
Health care has been left behind by other industries in the implementation of information technology and its capabilities to improve services quality and efficiency. As modern treatment methods and procedures are becoming more and more complex, implementation of information technology will play a big role in the provision of quality health care. After the implementation of the new technology policy, patient satisfaction rates improved and staff had an improved job satisfaction level. Staff had an easy time in their job, as procedures were quicker and easier. Hospital costs also decreased after the new technology had been implemented. For achievement of goals to be accomplished in the health sector, implementation of information technology in the health sector is inevitable.
