The controversy that surrounds the Monsanto Corporation generates from the company suing hundreds of farmers in the United States in the past decades; protecting their patent rights on genetically engineered seeds that Monsanto produces and sells, yearly. According to Paul Harris, a Seed Giants vs US Farmers, the CFS said it had tracked numerous lawsuits that Monsanto had brought against farmers and found some 142 patent infringement suits against 410 farmers and 56 small business in more than 27 states. In total the firm has won more than $23 million from its targets, according to the reports.
According to Dr. Marcola, the patenting of seeds is one of the many ways that Monsanto has affected food, farming and one’s health. (Ruggeri 2018) Monsanto has had several litigation cases. The one that stands out the most is the one of Dewayne Johnson who was diagnosed with lymphoma. Monsanto was held Liable for these lawsuits and was ordered to pay a lump sum of money. Johnson stated that he would apply Roundup to the grounds of a San Francisco school 20 to 30 times per year. He also stated that the glyphosate-based herbicide in the weed killer Roundup is what caused his disease. Monsanto developed genetically modified seeds that resist its own herbicide which is a substance that is toxic to plants and it is also used to destroy unwanted vegetation.
This Corporation has roughly become the world leader in genetic engineering of seeds. If a farmer buys its Roundup Ready seeds, they will require to sign an agreement promising not to save the seed produced after each harvest for re-planting, farmers can’t sell the seeds to other farmer, they must buy new seeds yearly. The seed market has become monopolized, the prizes of the Genetically Engineered seed are escalating. “According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, the average per-acre cost of soybean and corn seed increased 325 percent and 259 percent, respectively, between 1995 and 2011. This is roughly the time when acreage of GE corn and soy grew from less than 20 percent to more than 80-90 percent.” (Roseboro 2013)
When it comes to the legal requirements farmers must follow to produce and grow organic foods, the crop must be produced on land without the use of synthetic substances (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers) except those provided by the standards. Also, no prohibited substances can have been applied to the land for three years prior to harvest. The soil fertility and crop nutrient management must be performed prior to be able to improve the conditions of the soil and prevent the future contaminations of the crops soil, water, plant nutrients as well as heavy metals. Heirloom foods are flowers, vegetables and fruits grown from seeds that are passed down generation to generation, heirlooms have become more popular through the years due to popular organizations and company promote them. Heirloom tomatoes, melons, carrots among others in local farmers market, grocery stores and supermarkets. (Foley 2008)
Kraft dates to 1903. J.L. Kraft started with 65 dollars and a rented horse and wagon. He started purchasing cheese at Chicago’s whole sale market at water street and reselling it for a profit to local merchants. Four of Kraft’s brothers joined him in the business and in 1909 they incorporated as JL Kraft & Bros. Co. In 1916 Kraft acquired a patent for producing processed cheese. By 1917 Kraft acquired a government contract supplying cheese in tins to armed forces during world war I. Kraft later acquired additional products including Velveeta Processed cheese, Philadelphia cream cheese, Miracle whip salad dressing and Kraft dinner macaroni and cheese. Kraft used advertising campaigns including sponsoring television and radio shows.
