There are several diverse kinds of leadership theories and styles on the ways leaders must lead their employees

There are several diverse kinds of leadership theories and styles on the ways leaders must lead their employees. Behavioral theory is one that is created on the certainty that leaders are made and not born. The skills based leadership theory suggests that great leaders possess an array of abilities that they established through time. Therefore, choosing the correct leadership style is extremely significant for a leader because of the fact it determines the method that a leader wants to use to lead their employees and accomplish their work. This report will describe the situational leadership theory and why I feel it best describes me and my leadership style. It will also explain what leadership theory I prefer as a follower.
What leadership model, style, or theory best describes you as a leader?
The leadership theory that greatest portrays me as a leader would be the situational approach. This theory “implies that for any specific situation, a specific leadership style can be used” (Salehzadeh, Shahin, Krazemi & Shaemi Barzoki 2015). Employees prefer the situational leadership style since it gives them individualized conversations with their leader which aids in establishing and reinforcing work associations and organizational goals. With utilizing this style of leadership, it will help me recognize the skills of employees’ readiness to finish assignments, and their capability to allocate assignments appropriately. This leadership style best describes me due to it having the flexibility to use various types of leadership theories dependent on the circumstances.
It is significant that as a leader I acknowledge the determination, strengths and shortcomings of my employees. It is essential that I as a leader recognize the positions and conditions developing around the circumstances and adjust my leadership style to suit the circumstances. All situations will be dissimilar and by me utilizing the situational theory I am capable of altering my approach to leadership to be suitable to the situation of my employees as they progress forward and backward along the developmental continuum.
By utilizing situational approach I can alter my style of leadership in accordance with the development of my employees in accordance with the developmental levels and subsequent categories: “Directing (S1) high directive-low supportive, Coaching (S2) both high directive and supportive, Supporting (S3) high supportive with low directive, and Delegating (S4) low supportive and directive. Developmental levels D1 – low competence and high commitment, D2 – low to some competence and low commitment, D3 – moderate to high competence and variable commitment, and D4 – a high degree of competence and a high degree of commitment to get the job done” (Dugan 2017). To be an efficient leader who utilizes the situation approach it is essential that I be acquainted with the behaviors and developmental levels of my employees so that we can all be successful. For instance, if there is a new employee to my department and they are a S1 and D1 I would give them adequate supervision. The person would need me to show them how to do a job, but they are committed to the job and learning it. In utilizing the situational approach style of leadership I will gain the greatest outcomes by adjusting my style of leadership to suit the situation.
What are your most distinguishing leadership traits?
The greatest distinguishing leadership traits that I have are honesty, and inspiration. In order to be a moral and effective leader it is essential that I possess honesty. As an honest leader I may constantly be trusted and counted upon. I am continually capable of earning respect of my employees. Being an honest leader I will display the actuality and circumstances accurately and wholly, regardless of how crucial and dangerous the actuality might be. I will not falsify any actuality. Inspiration is a skill that I possess and can use to successfully lead employees. I possess inspiration to perpetually do all things to the greatest of my ability. I am perpetually inspired to transcend in all things that I do in my lifetime. It has continuously been a strong ambition of mine to lead and to be an effective leader necessitates inspiration of my employees. I believe as an effective leader I have the skills to inspire employees to perform to the greatest of their capabilities. Inspiration has the ability to compel employees to go above and beyond. I believe I possess that particular element that inspires and encourages employees to perform their best. By possessing this distinctive characteristic it will make my work as a leader a great deal simpler, since my employees will perpetually be inspired to get their work completed.
Honesty is essential in being an effective leader. I think a majority of employees prefer to work for a leader they know is honest. I am a truly honest individual that is not afraid to acknowledge when I am wrong. For example, as a leader it is my task to attempt to enhance a process or attempt new processes that occasionally flop. Successful leaders need to possess open and active conversations with their employees, but also need to be cautious to the degree of not disclosing damaging information. To become a successful leader it is essential that I display to my employees that I am honest even if it involves confessing to a mistake. This is a characteristic that employees search for in a leader. “Workers want their leaders to be role models whose allegiances and priorities are beyond reproach” (Wolf 2014).
What traits do you strive to learn to develop?
The leadership traits that I strive to learn to develop are communication skills, and self-awareness. Communicating effectively focuses on the way words are used, the quickness of conveying the words, tone modulation and body language. By utilizing the correct apparatuses to communicate the correct messages at the correct moment can save a disaster. It also assists in employees working on the correct assignments with an attitude that is right. If I can communicate adequately concerning anticipations, problems and advice, my employees will be better apt to respond and satisfy my goals. With self-awareness I need to be aware of the things I am skilled at while recognizing the things I still have yet to learn. To start to increase my self-awareness, I need to look for criticism on my performance from employees through asking respectable questions and listening with no rationalizing or protecting my actions.
As a Follower, what leadership approach do you prefer from your leader?
As an employee I would prefer the situational leadership approach. With this approach my leader would be familiar with my D4 development level which is a high intensity of capability and a high intensity of dedication to accomplishing the job. Being a D4 category my leader would know I do not need a lot of communication and can work on my own and finish all my tasks without being micromanaged. Situational leaders can use various leadership approaches depending on the situation. As an employee and having a leader that utilizes situational leadership I am assessed solely by the activities I exhibit. For instance, I recall getting penalized as a player on my soccer team at high school due to a team member not showing enough hustle at practice. The entire team had to run around the soccer field a few times which left us all completely exhausted due to one player. I recognize that a team is merely as strong as its weakest player, however if I am practicing at my maximum level than I should not be punished. Situational leadership provides leaders with the means required to establish if they are directive or supportive to meet the requirements of their employees. This leadership makes it necessary for the leader to pair their approach to the employee which is the leadership approach I would want if I was an employee.
What leadership model or theory best describes how you influence others?
The best leadership model that I can utilize to greatest persuade others is the situational approach. Successful leaders are individuals that have the ability to differentiate the necessities of their employees and alter their approach to meet the employee’s necessities. There are numerous diverse styles of leadership that tries to persuade others. Utilizing the situational approach concentrates on directive and supportive behaviors both. With this approach I am able to utilize directive behaviors thru bestowing instructions or instituting goals, and displaying how the goals are accomplished. Additionally I am able to persuade employees thru utilizing supportive behaviors such as resolving issues or commending an employee for great work. Situational style allows me the resilience to inspire every employee on my team in a way that particularly suits the behavior of the employee. For instance, with situational leadership there might be an employee who is a S3, this means it is two-way conversation and joint decision making. This approach is the participating/supporting leadership, where leaders involve employees in work associated facets and in how duties are to be achieved. One method to inspire my employees using situational approach is to request advice on goals and congratulate progress. An advantage of utilizing this approach is that I can utilize a particular style of leadership for a complete team, but various styles when handling one employee at a time contingent on the development level they are at.
