To study the effect of hypobaric hypoxia on renal structure

To study the effect of hypobaric hypoxia on renal structure, we evaluated the kidney tissue sections from rats exposed to different durations (1, 3 and 7 day) of hypobaric hypoxia and normoxia control groups. In H&E staining, renal cortical sections showing afferent arteriolopathy, leukocyte infiltration and thinning of tubular epithelium (Fig.4.1, A-D), which starts appearing from 1st day of hypoxia exposure and progressively increased up to maximum till 7th day of hypobaric hypoxia exposure. We also observed mild deposition of collagen in tubulointerstitial area and perivascular area in 3rd day and 7th day hypobaric hypoxic group of rats which has been shown both in Masson’s Trichome (Fig.4.1, E-H) and Picrosirius red stained slides (Fig.4.1, M-P). Similarly, we also found increased in mesangial proliferation and basement membrane thickening in 3rd and 7th day hypoxic group of rats as shown in Periodic Acid Schiff Staining (PAS) (Fig4.11, I-L).The changes we reported in microscopic images were mainly showing only cortical regions; however the hypoxia affects both cortex and medullary regions in kidney.
