“Tomorrow, when the war began”, explored humanity’s experience of war. It is about a tragic event that has happened to a peaceful town in Australia, Wirrawee. Luckily, there was a group of kids who were on camp, when they arrived back in the town, they realised that war had come to Australia and it tells of their struggle for survival. In the modern, peaceful days, it is shocking to realise that a war has come from nowhere, and when a war comes suddenly, nobody is prepared or ready for it, especially when it comes at midnight when everybody’s asleep. This is the situation that Ellie and her friends had to face. War is brought to Wirrawee, nobody saw it coming in the middle of the night. It begins when Ellie’s group was on camp and sounds of thousands of engines came from the sky, thebut not just one, lots of engines, hundredths, thousands of engines, they’d just couldn’t believe in their eyes. Ellie, with her friends, decide that they will go back to Wirrawee. From far away, they what they think are see parachutes. Hours later, when they are close to home, they heard horrible sounds, the sounds of people yelling, the sounds of dogs barking, the sounds of desperation and death. They finally arrive in Wirrawee, which was unusually quiet and scary, and find there was something that nobody would have wanted to see, what no kids in the world would have imagined of, and there were absolutely no way that Ellie and her friends have believed in their eyes, it was truly something more than just horrible. The pets are dead, people were dissapeared, the bloody old streets, and the collapsed buildings. There were even no way to get help from outside since all the electric cables were cutt and the phones smashed into pieces. One of the friends yelled with a shaky voice, full filled with fear “Oh My God! We’ve been invaded! Those were fighter jets we saw back then!” Without a doubt, anybody could tell what was happening, Australia, or at least the peaceful town of Wirrawee has been invaded by a foreign force. The novel explores what people do when war comes and the tru nature of humanity. It shows how the horrible conseuqneces of war change people it forces people to struggle for their survival and also shows that in these situations one may have only one choice to make – you have to kill in order to live. Ellie’s group finds themselves om this situation. When war comes they take control of the situation and figure out ways to stop the enemy from advancing instead of going mad or running away like other kid’s would’ve done. Ellie and her friends did such extraordinary things to survive, and they knew it more than anybody else, they had to do it. The novel shows how difficulties can make people stronger, mentally and physically, and how difficulties always change people in some way.
