We are surrounded by physics all the time and we don’t realize we are using it every day. The word “physics” comes from the Greek “knowledge of nature” and the field can analyze and understand the natural phenomena of the universe. Physics is the scientific study of matter and energy and how they interact with each other. This energy can take the form of motion, light, electricity, gravity and so on and with this information it uses scientific methods to test hypotheses based on observation. It deals with matter on scale ranging from sub-atomic particles to starts in the entire universe. It is also very difficult to understand but it is considered to be the most fundamental science so without it we wouldn’t have biology, chemistry or anything else. The first study of physic include the study of astronomy, and astronomy was humanity’s first organized field of science. Ancient peoples looked to the stars and recognized patterns there, then began using mathematical precision to make predictions about what would happen in the heavens based on the pattern. This slowly led to the physics we have today.
In our daily lives when we heat up to stay warm, lifting things up and driving all consist of physics. For example driving a car requires the understanding of basics physics, the balance of the car changes as it accelerates, decelerates and turns. To keep the car on the road, we must think about the force acting on the car. So after this, I thought I’d write my essay on Tesla as it is an environmentally friendly, a vehicle recently attracting a lot of attention.
Tesla is an American motor company that makes vehicles that runs on electricity and it is now one of the most famous environmentally friendly transportation. Tesla motors (the company) is an energy storage and solar panel manufacture. It was founded in 2003 and the company specializes not only in electric cars, lithium-ion battery but also solar panels and foot tiles. In 2008 Tesla’s cutting edge technology and electric power unveiled. They designed the world’s first premium all electric sedan named Model S that run in a record of 0-60mph and an acceleration time of 2.28 seconds.
How the Tesla runs is very similar to how smartphones and laptop work; they use lithium-ion batteries just like they ones we use to charge our laptops. The one difference is that Tesla batteries are a lot more powerful and each tesla car is made up of millions of lithium-ion cells. When understanding how Tesla works it is first very important to know wat energy is. Energy is very important but the concept of energy is very hard to understand. In the dictionary is says that the property of matter that is manifest as a capacity to perform work. After it says the “work” is the exertion of force overcoming resistance or producing molecular changes. But according to the law of conservation of energy, energy can’t be created or destroyed but only be transferred or transformed from one form to another and every living things needs energy in order to survive. All of the energy used on earth comes from the sun. The joule in a common unit of energy define the amount of energy it takes to apply force of one newton through distance of one meter. The early Greeks established the first qualitative physics laws, such as Archimedes description of the principle of levers but they did not conduct experiments until later on. The law of electricity and electromechanical waves and magnetism were developed in the 1800s by Faraday and Maxwell. In the car the job of the engine is to convert energy from fuel source into mechanical energy. Bladed turbines had fewer moving parts, but they presented their own problems. Most were huge pieces of machinery with very narrow tolerances. If not built properly, blades could break or crack. Tesla’s new engine was a bladeless turbine, which would still use a fluid as the vehicle of energy, but would be much more efficient in converting the fluid energy into motion. In the first patent, Tesla introduced his basic bladeless design configured as a pump or compressor. In the second patent, Tesla modified the basic design so it would work as a turbine. And finally, with the third patent, he made the changes necessary to operate the turbine as an internal combustion engine.
The reason why we need electric cars are because using oil and fossil fuel for car is very bad for the environment and the resources are very limited. It makes the atmospheric co2 level rise also making the temperature rise. Most of the transportation are run on petrol and it is very dirty. Fossil fuels such as Coal and petrol is also something that contributes to the environment disorder. Coal is a black sedimentary rock that is found underground. The lowest layer called the coal bed is the cheapest and the best when making electricity. It releases about 30% more CO2 than burning oil. More than half of the coal burning happens in China making china the biggest consumer of coal. Another fossil fuel is oil. Petroleum oil or crude oil is the two main ones, both found deep underground. This is the typical barrel of US oil broken down in 2004 – 44.9% gas for cars, 29% heating oil, 13% for rubber and plastic, 10% jet fuel and 2.0% asphalt. In US is the largest consumer of oil. Lastly natural gas which is formed when underground oil is highly heated and it is the cleanest. They are the major source of electricity.
Nowadays there are many cars that are considered greener than petrol cars such as hybrid cars, plug in hybrid cars, hydrogen cars and so on. The one thing all of these have in common is an electric motor. This is where electricity is sent into the outer stator which causes the hot rotor to rotate. The rotor is attached to the wheel axle which turns the wheels around. There are two types of electric motors, the alternating current induction motor and the brushless DC electric motor. The first one had no physical contact between the motor and stator which produces a rotating magnetic field. The rotor can never catch up to the rotating field and they are just “chasing it” and that what powers the car. As I said earlier for greener cars there are hybrid electric vehicles which has both motor and internal combustion engine. The battery gets charged from an electric trick called regenerative braking which all the joules of kinetic energy in a car is used when moving but are lost when the car brakes and is then covered into heat. With regenerative braking, electric cars send some of the kinetics energy into the battery, holding onto those joules to be used later. The electric component of the hybrid cars replaces the needs to burn gas increasing the mile and decreasing cars emission. Hydrogen cars are 100% electric but they don’t use battery like Tesla. Just like gas car they fill up the tank with hydrogen and when it mixes with oxygen it produces electricity.
In the Teslar car, the bank of the battery ESS (energy storage system) energy has 60, 85- performance kWh. 80-kWh-16 modules with 6 groups, 60-kWh- 14 modules. They weight about 1000 pounds in total and Tesla claims that they provide four to five times the energy density stores of other battery. A separate computer processor controls each sector to make sure all of the charging and discharging is handled smoothly. The PEM (power electronic module) is a power inverter and charging system that converts DC power to AC power using 72 insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Under peak acceleration, the batteries can crank out 200 kW of energy — enough to light 2,000 incandescent light bulbs. This 220-volt, 70-amp outlet allows for a full recharge in 3.5 hours from a completely dead battery. The charger power is 10kW; 20kW double charger and the charging time for 120V is around 48hours, 240V is around 4hours. You can plug it in at night and have a fully-charged car in the morning. There’s also a mobile kit that allows recharging at any electrical outlet wherever you are. The length of time it takes to charge using the mobile kit depends on the outlet power that you’re using.
In addition to controlling charge and discharge rates, the Power Electronics Module controls voltage levels, the motor’s RPM (revolutions per minute), and the regenerative braking system. This braking system receives the kinetic energy usually lost through braking and transfers it back into the ESS. The efficiency of the battery, PEM and motor systems is between 85 and 95 percent, allowing the motor to put out up to 185 kW of power. Aluminum heat dissipation fins and a rear-mounted ventilation port keep the power transistors from overheating.
With Tesla continuing to make products affordable to more and more people and soon it will be the advent of clean transport and clean energy production. Electric cars, batteries and renewable energy generation and storage already exist but when combined they become even more powerful. Trying to understand the unknown is still a central problem in human life. Despite all of our advancement in science and technology, being a human being mean that you are able to understand some things and things you will never understand. Science teaches you a methodology for approaching the unknown and asking questions that get us to known the unknown. Physics keeps changing as we progress and make new discoveries. They also create new questions that might not have even made sense when viewed from within the previous theory of physics. This makes physics exciting and interesting, but it also forces attempts at defining physics into generalizations about what physics has been rather than what it might be at some point in the future. The laws of nature can be used to predict the behavior of the world and all kinds of machinery. Many of the everyday technological inventions that we now take for granted resulted from discoveries in physics.
