When Europeans arrived to New Zealand in the 17th century it brought enormous changes to the Maori way of life. M?ori people gradually adopted many aspects of Western society and culture. The relations between the Europeans and the Maori people were lagrely friendly in the begining.
In 1840 representatives of the Brithis Crown and Maori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand signed a treaty called the Treaty of Waitangi.
The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi is a very significant event that has led to what New Zealand is today. It gave Europeans and the Maori people a common ground to live as one. It is one of the most significant event in New Zealand as it still has an impact on people today, nearly 200 years after the event.
